System Overview
NIS divides publishing work into 'Jobs' and 'Tasks'.

A Job is a single publishing process - for example: producing the sports section of a newspaper; the current news pages for a web site or the letters page in a magazine; or the front and continuation pages of a newspaper.

Tasks are the parts of work needed to complete the Job - for example: a single article in a newspaper; a picture to be used in a magazine; or an advert for use on the front page. Each Task would hold the individual documents needed for its completion.

A Job can consist of one or many Tasks and Tasks may be shared between Jobs. This simple yet powerful organization allows cases, for example, where two similar Jobs would share tasks between them. One such use is to manage the print and web editions of a newspaper. These would be regarded as separate Jobs but would share some Tasks (for example the main articles) so that common work is nor duplicated.
